Students Against War is an open, non-hierarchical collective made up of students, university staff and other supporters who are campaigning against military research at the University of Wollongong, as well as against war and militarism more generally.
At a time when issues like global warming demand more urgent attention than ever, it's disgraceful that the University of Wollongong is receiving tens of millions of dollars to design components for lethal new killing technology for the benefit of arms corporations who profit from war and death. It's all the more disgraceful when UOW then goes on to claim that demands that it purchase more renewable energy are "impossible" and "unrealistic" due to an alleged lack of funds. We want money for renewable energy and education, not for war.
Beginning in 2010 with just two members, we've drawn in dozens of new activists and supporters, distributed thousands of leaflets and posters, held many well attended film screenings and forums, appeared in at least twenty newspaper, radio, TV and magazine items, hosted Nobel Peace Prize-nominee Helen Caldicott, and successfully occupied UOW's war labs for over two hours. In 2011 we're going to be ramping up our campaigning in a bigger way than ever in an effort to heighten anti-war consciousness on campus, and permanently end war research at UOW!
